The Good Samaritan

Luke 10:25-37

The details:
  1. Jesus tells a lawyer to love the Lord, and his neighbor as himself
  2. Jesus asked by a Lawyer, “Who is my neighbor”
  3. Man goes from Jerusalem to Jericho, falls among thieves
  4. Thieves strip him, wound him, leave him half dead
  5. Priest comes by, sees him, crosses to the other side of the road
  6. Levite does the same
  7. Samaritan comes by, has compassion on him
  8. Goes to him, binds up wounds, pouring in oil and wine
  9. Sets him upon his beast, brings him to an inn, takes care of him
  1. Pays two pence to the innkeeper, will pay additional expenses
  2. Which was neighbor?

The verse:

A lawyer sharper than a knife
Asked how to earn eternal life
Jesus said to him at length
Love God with heart and mind and strength
And one more thing would really help
To love your neighbor as yourself

The lawyer tried the Lord to tempt
By asking him with some contempt
And from the wily mouth of his
Said “Tell me who my neighbor is”
The Lord then told a parable
About a man who suffered woe

A man went from Jerusalem
And fell among some wicked men
They beat him, stripped him, then they fled
And left the man they'd robbed half dead
Along the road he could not go
Though he was bound for Jericho

Along the road from west to east
There came a most religious priest
Who was revered for holy ways
He lived and taught all through his days
He looked ahead, the victim spied
Then crossed o'er to the other side

A pious Levite came along
Who practiced right and never wrong
Steadily he marked his pace
Deliberately, no thought to race
And then he saw the ailing man
And crossed the road upon the land

And then upon the road did come
A commonplace Samaritan
Who saw the man a suffering there
And with compassion rendered care
He bound his wounds, used oil and wine
The victim's needs were his design

Upon his beast the man he laid
And took him to an inn for aid
The inkeeper he gave two pence
And promised he'd pay more expense
To nurse the suffering man to health
He offered pay from his own wealth

Now Jesus told this tale because
He'd ask who the real neighbor was
Which of the three good works had done,
The Priest, Levite, Samaritan?
Twas he who served the man in pain
Now we should go and do the same.
